Clock Hours of Instruction & Transfer of Credits
A clock hour is the equivalent of onsite clock hours. Example: A 30-clock hour online course is the equivalent of taking a 30-hour onsite course. Clock hours transfer to other colleges, universities and vocational institutions. The transferability of clock hour credits you earn at VDCI to another college, university or school is determined solely by the receiving institution.

Program Prerequisites for Successful CompletionFundamental working knowledge of the Windows environment. Manual drafting experience is beneficial. The more advanced courses have previous courses or approved experience prerequisites. Advanced courses are preceded by introductory and intermediate level courses.
Our classes are fast-track, accelerated courses. If you have ANY CONCERNS about your computer competency, we STRONGLY RECOMMEND that you discuss this concern with the Program Manager prior to enrollment..
Interaction with Faculty & Fellow Students
VDCI is known for our strong interaction between faculty and students. You can message your instructor 1:1 through our Learning Management System. You can also message your classmates. There are discussion forums for each course along with the "VDCI Student Lounge", which is regularly used to communicate via Facebook with classmates, other VDCI students and VDCI alumni.

Introduction to AutoCAD (30 Clock Hours) – Familiarizes students with basic AutoCAD commands while developing a floor plan for a single family residential home.
Create drafting symbols, kitchen and bath fixtures, a floor plan and integrate all information into one deliverable sheet file. Distinguish the differences required to generate drawings for use as annotation and real-world model components. Create and insert blocks and externally reference files, and determine the appropriate times to apply those skill sets. Master file management, drafting on layers, integrating drawing component files and plotting while creating on the class residential project.
Intermediate AutoCAD (30 Clock Hours) – Developing and assembling a set of 2D design construction documents.
Create an abbreviated set of construction documents including floor plan, foundation plan, electrical plan and building elevations for a small residential project. Create and insert blocks, externally reference files and determine the appropriate times to apply those skill sets to optimize project efficiency. Demonstrate layer and file management, external file referencing, use of model/layout environments and user coordinate systems. Apply intermediate-level skills including layer management, user coordinate system development, creating sheet layout environments and plotting.
AutoCAD Construction Documents 1 - Recommended - (30 Clock Hours) – Creating a floor plan, multi-scale plan, roof plan and building elevations for a one-story residence.
Create titleblock and titleblock/drawing label components for a professional office to facilitate development of deliverable sheet files. Create floor plan, enlarged plan, roof plan and building elevation of a moderately complex residential project. Includes the development of floor plan, roof plan and elevation notes. Successfully integrate referenced files to create construction documents. Demonstrate layer and file management, use of model/layout environments and multi-scale drawing presentation. Apply intermediate-level skills to create sheet layout environments and plotting. Organize deliverable sheet set to conform to the National CAD Standards.
AutoCAD Construction Documents 2 (30 Clock Hours) – Creating a site an architectural site plan, a title sheet, develop building elevations, building and wall sections, interior elevations and schedules.
Create building elevations, building sections, wall sections; modify detail drawings; create metes and bounds (Civil) drawing; create relevant deliverable sheet files for a moderately complex residential project. Includes the development of title sheet and appropriate general and keynote legends. Successfully integrate referenced files to create construction documents. Demonstrate layer and file management, use of model/layout environments and multi-scale drawing presentations. Apply intermediate/advanced-level skills to create sheet layout environments and plotting. Organize deliverable sheet set to conform to the National CAD Standards.
Introduction to Revit (20 Clock Hours) – Designing 3D models that simultaneously document the project in schedules and 2D architectural drawings.
Explore the Building Information Modeling (BIM) interface. Design a 3D building model to explain how information is inter-related throughout the BIM model. Integrate building components into a 3D model and develop construction document sheets from that model. Develop a project which includes stairs and “feature architectural designs” to strengthen BIM modeling skill sets.
Intermediate Revit (20 Clock Hours) – Utilizing the family editor to create 2D and 3D components, refining graphics, and construction documentation.
Integrate DWG files to create Revit details and plan views for subsequent sheet layout. Tag elements for cost estimation and material take-offs. Create 3D parametric families and show alternate views of 3D objects in plan and elevation views. Build customized door, window, and materials schedules. Explore BIM management by creating an abbreviated set of construction documents.
BIM Construction Documents 1 (30 Clock Hours) – Modeling an existing single story building on a site model and adding a second story expansion.
Apply BIM modeling tools to create an architectural model, including existing building, partial demolition and a new construction. Build topography for a project using existing external files and develop a site plan, including hardscape and landscaping. Graphically differentiate phasing of a project from existing construction through new construction. Produce renderings suitable for presentation and documentation.
BIM Construction Documents 2 (30 Clock Hours) – Developing a full set of Architectural Construction Documents using Revit.
Prepare a set of architectural construction documents incorporating the site and building models created in BIM 301. Develop progress sets of construction documents, reflecting 30/60/90/100 percent deliverable submittals. Produce plan, section, and elevation views of the project for sheet layout. Keynote elements of the project model. Develop schedules and a limited number of architectural details extracted from the BIM model.
Certificate Completion Practical (30 Clock Hours)– Applying skill sets learned from all of your previous courses, and integrating them into one project, where you and your instructor design your Certificate Completion Practical.
Demonstrate an understanding and knowledge of the acquired software and workflow skills through previous classes. Create a completed project of the student’s own design or selected design to highlight the skills that the student has acquired through required and elective courses. Participate in a design and documentation process without the aid of direct tutorial videos. Research construction document standards, construction systems, and design methodologies to influence the use of software and workflow.

CAD Detailing (20 Clock Hours) – Developing architectural details using the two dominant methods utilized within architectural and engineering firms.
Create detail drawings pertinent to the course project. Create relevant deliverable sheet files. Integrate referenced files to create details for construction documents. Demonstrate layer and file management, use of model/layout environments and multi-scale drawing presentations. Apply intermediate/advanced-level skills to create sheet layout environments and plotting.
CAD & Project Management (20 Clock Hours) – Teaches people important skill sets to help them succeed as CAD and Project Managers.
Demonstrate understanding of the technical and managerial skills required to succeed as a CAD and Project Manager. Organize the AutoCAD User Interface to optimize productivity and standards for an office. Use office standard file naming and file organization. Master an understanding of the National CAD Standards. Convert “an inherited CAD project” into a format which supports the National CAD Standards and Office CAD Standards.
BIM Detailing (20 Clock Hours) - Developing a series of architectural details for the commercial building.
Create detail drawings of building systems which illustrate structural integrity and sound building construction practices. Create and integrate detail drawings which limit or prevent accidental injury or death among users of the buildings. Prepare detail drawings illustrating construction systems, products, and finishes.
BIM Project Management (20 Clock Hours) - Utilizing Revit tools to collaborate with other team members, streamline workflow, and manage a BIM Project.
Explore BIM Project Management and discuss its uses and concepts. Implement workflow procedures to efficiently use BIM. Perform interference checks/clash coordination to highlight the benefits of BIM. Participate in the use of work-sharing and the project management principles when working on a large project documents.
Revit MEP 1 (30 Clock Hours) - Designing HVAC, plumbing, piping and electrical systems in Revit.
Create MEP (Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing) systems using Revit MEP for the use of construction documents and construction coordination. Implement workflow strategies in Revit MEP for efficient use of the software. Produce construction documents from the model file. Demonstrate work-sharing and how it can be implemented for larger projects.
Revit MEP 2 (20 Clock Hours) - Developing Construction Documents for HVAC, plumbing, piping and electrical systems in Revit.
Explore the methodologies for turning a MEP building model into construction documents that can be used for construction. Apply workflow strategies for efficient use of a BIM Model. Label building components using annotative elements to create a sheet view that can be used for construction documents. Produce a set of working construction documents with annotations, detail callouts, and general notes.
Revit Structure 1 (20 Clock Hours) - Designing Structural Systems in Revit.
Create an accurate structure, for use in all program aspects of designing a project and the construction of a real-world model. Design structural building systems which create buildings with structural integrity. Develop building structures which limit or prevent accidental injury or death among users of the buildings. Design and develop structural building systems.
Revit Structure 2 (30 Clock Hours) - Developing Construction Documents for Structural Systems in Revit.
Prepare a set of structural construction documents using Revit Structure incorporating the building models created in BIM 341. Produce plan, section, elevation and enlarged views of the project for sheet layout. Keynote elements of the project model. Develop schedules and a limited number of structural details extracted from the BIM model.
Introduction to Navisworks (30 Clock Hours) – Running object-interference checks on 3D models, creating 4D simulations, interactive animations, and photorealistic renderings using Navisworks.
Explore the methodologies for integrating Revit, 3D AutoCAD and compatible software programs into a Navisworks 3D model which can be used to create clash detection between various structural and MEP systems. Apply workflow strategies for efficient use of integrating various BIM models into clash detection analysis models. Create timeline animations representing 4D construction modeling and scheduling. Produce and resolve time-based clash detection reports which will minimize on-site construction change order requests.
Introduction to Civil 3D (30 Clock Hours) - Applying Civil 3D for basic 3D design projects.
Create a topographic survey document by importing relevant field-generated data. Develop site parcels, using survey data; properly displaying parcel data; including surface generation and surface manipulation. Create site profile views, terrain profiles, and design profiles. Master surface and point manipulation including fine-tuning manipulation to accurately reflect existing and future site conditions.
Intermediate Civil 3D (30 Clock Hours) - Emphasizes intermediate civil engineering tools within Civil 3D.
Design and create a corridor and derive information and data from the corridor. Design and create an intersection. Create and analyze sections and section views. Design and create a grading model and a grading model feature line.
Civil 3D Construction Documents (30 Clock Hours) - Using major Civil3D design elements
Design and create pressure networks in plan and profile. Discover and explore data referencing of Civil3D design elements. Utilize data referencing to create new drawings. Produce professional plans utilizing sheet sets.
Introduction to 3ds Max - Modeling - Recommended - (20 Clock Hours) - Basic modeling techniques and rendering tools using 3ds Max.
Acquire basic understanding of the User Interface to become comfortable with the 3ds Max work environment. Explore different methods of creating Standard Primitives. Demonstrate proficiency in modifying Standard Primitives to create furniture for the class project. Discover methods of applying materials to objects in a project.
Intermediate 3ds Max - Rendering (30 Clock Hours) - Advanced modeling techniques and rendering tools using 3ds Max.
Acquire advanced modeling tools to develop a variety of objects. Explore advanced material and lighting settings, including the use of external images to produce photorealistic renderings. Construct multiple scenes and scene states to efficiently model, navigate, and render 3ds Max files. Build a skills toolbox for personal and professional development of image renderings.
3ds Max – Animation 1 (30 Clock Hours) – Animation techniques and rendering.
Acquire advanced modeling tools to develop a variety of 3D objects. Explore advanced material and lighting settings, including the use of external images and HDR photos to produce photorealistic renderings. Construct animation sequences using key frame and curve editor applications. Build a skills toolbox for personal and professional development of renderings and animations.
Introduction to SketchUp - Recommended - (20 Clock Hours) - intro to SketchUp, preliminary massing studies, preliminary interior design, AutoCAD compatibility, basic presentation techniques.
Design massing and preliminary design 3D models. Determine the most efficient way of accurately and productively working within SketchUp. Use all of the SketchUp tools to best learn the functionality of the software program. Create walk throughs of 3D models using the camera tools.
Intermediate SketchUp (20 Clock Hours) - Schematic design concepts, design development concepts, AutoCAD compatibility pt.2, Revit compatibility, other 3d software compatibility, refined presentation techniques.
Use more advanced SketchUp tools to create doors, walls, windows and to detail the interior of buildings. Create and edit new materials and add photo textures to SketchUp models from Google Earth. Create scenes, generate scene settings and animate those settings in SketchUp. Explore creating topography and exporting images and animations.
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop (30 Clock Hours) – Learn about the user interface and Photoshop’s impressive tools.
Explore the tools of Photoshop for use in the professional environment to construct presentation or marketing material. Employ techniques to adjust, enhance, and compose files to produce a useable document. Implement proper editing techniques for file/layer management. Produce a completed document ready for use in print media or digitally.
Intermediate Adobe Photoshop (30 Clock Hours) – This intermediate online Photoshop class reinforces techniques and expands on using Photoshop tools.
You will learn important strategies on how to work successfully with Photoshop. You will work on a real-world project and will learn how to plan, design, collaborate and export a project.
Introduction to Adobe Illustrator (30 Clock Hours) – Learn the Adobe Illustrator user interface and the specific tools and features that make Illustrator valuable. Learn basic strategies to design, supplement, and export graphic materials.
Intermediate Adobe Illustrator (30 Clock Hours) – This class reinforces basic strategies of DAC 241 and introduces intermediate techniques for graphic design. Learn additional tools and methods to craft a series of graphic marketing materials.
Blueprint Reading for Residential Construction - Recommended - (10 Clock Hours) – Utilizes lectures, hands-on demonstrations and lab exercises to familiarize participants with the art of blueprint reading.
Demonstrate an understanding of the inter-relationship between the drawings included in a set of Construction Documents (blueprints) for a Custom Residential and a Mixed-Use Commercial project. Analyze different drawings and see how information is referenced throughout a set of Construction Documents. Evaluate the similarities between all sets of construction documents submitted for building permits. Recognize the need for consistency in presenting information in all types of Construction Documents.
Blueprint Reading for Commercial Construction - Recommended - (20 Clock Hours) - An indepth study of architectural, civil, engineering, interior and other construction documents for a mixed-use commercial project.
Demonstrate an understanding of the inter-relationship between the drawings included in a set of commercial project Construction Documents (blueprints) for a large Mixed-Use project (hotel, parking and retail). Analyze different drawings and see how information is referenced throughout a set of Construction Documents. Evaluate the similarities between all sets of construction documents submitted for building permits. Recognize the need for consistency in presenting information in all types of Construction Documents. Gain experience understanding how 3D model presentations within a set of construction documents makes the construction documents easier to understand the project.
Construction Estimating - Recommended - (20 Clock Hours) - Starting at the very beginning, you will learn about the types of estimates and how an estimate is organized. You will learn the purposes for construction estimating, the estimating tools used and the skills required for construction estimating.
Demonstrate an understanding of the inter-relationship between the construction drawings and a quantity-takeoff cost estimate. Analyze the components of a construction cost estimate and learn how a quantity-takeoff cost estimate is created. Master an understanding of quantity surveying, estimating takeoffs and pricing estimated quantities. Recognize the need for thoroughness and attention to detail when preparing construction cost estimates.
Overview, Site Utilities, Earthwork, Foundations (10 Clock Hours) – Learn about the roles played by the design & construction team. Learn how the site is prepared, the types of equipment used, different types of soil conditions & why various building foundations are used.
The Building Structure (10 Clock Hours) – Learn about the cranes used, designing a building structure, the structural systems & how building load is analyzed and factored into the design. Receive an in-depth study of cast-in-place & precast concrete and structural steel.
The Building Envelope (10 Clock Hours) – Learn about the building envelope, cold-formed steel stud systems, cladding systems, curtain walls, roofing systems and glass window systems. Learn how the building envelope keeps water out and controls temperature & humidity.
Interiors and Finish Site Work (10 Clock Hours) – Learn about walltypes, interior partitions, drywall and drywall finishes and construction sequencing. Learn about construction sequences for curbs, asphalt paving & landscaping.
Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing & AV-Tel-Data (20 Clock Hours) – This course is an in-depth study about MEP and building systems, including thermal comfort, indoor air quality, HVAC controls & how plumbing, electrical & emergency distribution systems function.
Fire Protection, Startup/Testing & Closeout (10 Clock Hours) – Learn many details about fire suppression systems, life-safety requirements, installing elevators, building commissioning, certificate of occupancy and project closeout.

(Step 1) Review a Technology Certificate Program Enrollment Agreement & Program Requirements
Before enrolling into a program, please review the Technology Certificate Program Requirements.
Then, click on the name of your Technology Certificate Program below and review that Enrollment Agreement. Once you register for the
program, you will be acknowledging that you have reviewed the Enrollment Agreement before making your payment. You will be completing a copy of your Technology Certificate Program Enrollment agreement after you have registered your Certificate Program.

(Step 2) Register for the Technology Certificate Program
- Choose the Payment Plan for your Technology Certificate Program and follow the checkout steps.
- You will receive a confirmation email for your records. You will also receive a separate email with the next steps:
- Review the VDCI School Catalog and Student Performance Fact Sheets.
- Submit a copy of a high school diploma, GED, or other proof of former education in order such as a transcript, diploma, or certificate to firstname.lastname@example.org.
- A staff member will reach out to you to go over the program details and requirements.
- Once all details and requirements have been discussed, you will be asked to fill out several enrollment forms, including an Enrollment Agreement, via Adobe Sign.
- After you have submitted your Enrollment Agreement, you will receive an executed copy of your Enrollment Agreement via email.
(Step 3) Begin your Technology Certificate Program!
After the Enrollment Process is complete, our administrative staff will reach out to you to elcome you to the VDCI Technology Certificate Program, to discuss your schedule, your required and elective course options.
Technology Certificate Students will be automatically placed in a “trial period” for six weeks or until their first two courses in the program have been successfully completed with a "C-" (70%) or better. These courses must include one required introductory level and one required intermediate level course required for the completion of the student’s certificate program.
